For many years, Shaw residents bemoaned the fact that they had no gathering place where neighbors could enjoy coffee and dessert and discuss community affairs or catch up on what was happening in their lives. Then, in April 2005, former Ritz Carlton manager Azeb Desta opened Azi's Cafe at the southwest corner of 9th and O Streets, NW, and the coffee shop/cafe instantly became a new center of gravity for the neighborhood. Since then, Azi's (pronounced AHH-zees) has received a variety of accolades, including Best New Shaw Business of 2005, and has expanded its menu to include new breakfast and lunch offerings.

Stop by today for delicious Illy coffee or a frozen coffee drink, a freshly made salad, a hot pannini or bowl of soup, or pick up some of the great deserts to enjoy at home. Azi's has free WiFi for customers. And remember Azi's Catering for your next event!

Reviews of Azi's from neighbors and visitors

"The owner (Azi) is sweet and friendly, and she makes some fabulous coffeehouse food - the chicken salad sandwich and the ham and cheese panini are fabulous. The cakes and pastries are fresh and delicious..." - Carmen on yelp.com

"Azi makes a great cafe au lait for a reasonable price, and offers tasty paninis and muffins. Azi is incredibly nice, and has good tunes playing every time I visit. Free wi-fi and a good patio in the nice weather is also to be had there.

I will take Azi's over $tarbuck$ anyday." - ML on DCist.com
